Valve issued a warning to AMD graphics card users who playCounter-Strike 2on PC to turn off the “Anti-Lag+” feature until a fix from AMD is released. However, Valve added once a fix is implemented by AMD, the company would work on reversing the bans on affected users.
In October 2023, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition was updated to version 23.10.1, and brought with it support for games such asLords of the Fallenand Anti-Lag+ support forCounter-Strike 2. According to the company, Anti-Lag+ is a feature that is exclusive to the Radeon RX 7000 line of graphics cards,including the Radeon RX 7700 XTreleased in September 2023. According to AMD, the technology uses frame alignment within a game’s code to decrease input latency. By comparison, the older and more widely available Anti-Lag implementation reduces the amount of CPU load to decrease input latency at the cost of a few frames per second in certain scenarios. Both settings can be turned on or off within the AMD Software’s graphics panels either on a per-game or a system-level basis.
However, turning Anti-Lag+ off is necessary forCounter-Strike 2players who want to keep playing. Due to the way the game’s code is accessed by AMD, Valve’s Anti-Cheat within Steam will trigger and falsely ban players. On social media, Valve stated that it is aware of the false flags, and is working with AMD to implement a fix. Users of older AMD graphics cards, such asthe highly-regarded Radeon RX 6700 XT, were unaffected due to Anti-Lag+ being an exclusive feature of the Radeon RX 7000 series.
Since the bans were made known, AMD quietly pulled version 23.10.1 from its support page, with the previous version 23.9.3 being the only one publicly available. On social media, users criticized both AMD and Valve for allowing this issue to slip through the cracks and hoped the quality assurance teams would release a fix as quickly as possible. In addition, some users continued to air theirgrievances at Valve for replacingCounter-Strike: Global OffensivewithCS2.
