The world of esports is a competitive one as players and teams from around the world face-off regularly to prove they are the best in games likeLeague of Legends.100 Thieves, T1, Cloud9, TSM, and Team Liquid are just four of the many teams from around the world striving to be the best in the popular MOBA as more people look for avenues to become professionals. It’s this competitve scene that has the eye of the team behindAmerican Vandal, which will now bring its brand of comedy into the esports world with its newest project.
Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the minds behindAmerican Vandal, announced their next mockumentary will be set within theLeague of Legendsesports scene. TitledPLAYERS, the mockumentary will follow a fictionalLeague of Legendsteam seeking to win its first championship and bring “years of close calls and heartache” to an end. The lead characters is the team newest member, a 17-year-oldLeagueprodigy, and the team’s veteran player who must come together if the team has any hope of winning its first championship.

CBS Studios will be producingPLAYERSalongside Funny or Die andLeague of Legends’developer,Riot Games. It also marks the first project Yacenda and Perrault have worked on together since the two seasons ofAmerican Vandalthe duo produced for Netflix from 2017 to 2018.PLAYERSis set to release digitally on Paramount+, but an official release date has not been announced.
While CBS, Perrault, and Yacenda had plenty of choices when it came to esports scene to lampoon,League of Legendsmakes the most sense from an exposure standpoint.League’sprofessional scene is one of the biggest and most successful going today, to the point where some countries have asked Riot about joining the pro circuit. Norway was one such country to do so whenPrime Minister Erna Solbergsent a letter to Riot on behalf of Omaken Sports asking to join.
Riot was also one of several developers which participated inPlayVS amateur esports eventsit ran during the summer of 2021. College and high school kids were able to participate in amateurLeague of Legendsevents run by PlayVS, serving as a potential springboard into the pro circuit for some students.
The only other question remaining is how far Yacenda and Perrault will push envelope withPLAYERS’comedy, especially given the raunchy material seen inAmerican Vandal. The duo have shown an ability to pull back when needed, especially Yacenda given his work on the FX seriesDave, but viewers shouldn’t be surprised to see jokes and sequences inspired by the pair’s previous and more mature material.
