Among Usoriginally launched back in 2018, but didn’t really take off until 2020, when it soared in popularity. Streamers helped to propel awareness of the title, and those who were stuck at home due to the pandemic ended up enjoying it as a way to stay connected with those they were physically separated from. The title’s newfound popularity was enough for the developers to hold off on anAmong Us 2, instead choosing to further support the existing title.

Among Us VRlaunchedin late 2022, and now, just 10 weeks later, the developer has come forward with an update on how it’s performing. According to a tweet from the game’s official account, the title has sold over 1 million copies despite its short time on the market. In addition, the game has seen over 4 million play sessions from players across 122 countries. It seems the virtual reality adaptation of the game has pleased players, and with the developer promising updates to the title through the year, it’s likely those numbers will continue to rise.

Among Us VRis likely succeeding not only due to the extreme popularity of the original game, but due to an uptick in virtual reality headsets being in average gamers' homes. The Meta Quest 1 and 2 have helped to fuel this surge, providing an affordable method of enjoying virtual reality without the need to be tethered to a powerful PC. The Valve Index has also seen a lot of success, and Sony’s PS VR2 is set to launch in the near future. Virtual reality can be a lot of fun, but games like these are far more likely to succeed among those who already own VR headsets and know what they can expect from the medium.

While not every gamer is interested in virtual reality, there’s a lot that it can add to gaming experiences, especially when dealing with horror games likeResident Evil Villageor tension-filled games likeAmong Us.
