Assassin’s Creed Valhallapromises to shake upAssassin’s Creed’s combat in an exciting way. According to Creative Director Ashraf Ismail, the game will allow players to truly dual-wield.
Ismail made the statement during an interview with Game Informer. Now that Ubisoft has lifted the veil on the game withAssassin’s Creed Valhallafirst trailer, the developer, Ubisoft Montreal, has decided to divulge all kinds of information about it.

Assassin’s Creedhas never allowed players to dual-wield before — at least not likeValhallawill. Past games have allowed players to equip a secondary weapon, but they couldn’t use it in tandem with their primary; they could only swap into it during combat. And admittedly, some games have allowed players to use two weapons at a time like a sword and pistol. But the combinations they could use were minimal, and normally geared toward a specific protagonist.
But from the way Ismail words his statement,Valhallawon’t have any such limitations. In the interview, he says, “You can pretty much dual-wield any combination of weapons, whether it’s a bearded ax and a sword, or two axes.” This sounds likeEivor —Valhalla’s Viking protagonist and assassin— will be able to dual-wield anything that the player can get their hands on. Ismail even uses dual-wielding shields as an example, saying, “If you want to dual-wield two shields, have fun! We don’t hold back from that.”
And it seems players will have access to a pretty extensive pool of weapons to choose from. Ismail notes that the dev team put in all kinds of things from the Viking era, such as flails, spears, bearded axes, Dane axes, longswords, round shields, and tower shields. The cinematic trailer even reveals that Evoir will have access to the franchise’s signatureHidden Blades.
Players will want to experiment with all kinds of weapon combinations. Ismail claims thatUbisoft Montrealcreated a large variety of enemies. Not only that, but it gave them several unique capacities and ways to use the environment, and it did all of this to keep players on their toes even if they’re 10, 15, 20 hours deep in their playthroughs. In other words, players should come face to face with all kinds of situations, and different weapon combinations will probably handle specific ones better than others.
All in all,Assassin’s Creed Valhallasounds very promising in the combat department. Ubisoft plans to show off official gameplay on May 7, during the upcoming X Box Series X stream, so fingers crossed that the dual-wielding function will be displayed.
