How Avowed Approaches Magic
Avowedtakes place within the sinister and unforgiving world of Eora, the same setting as thePillars of Eternityseries. In such a dangerous place, players will need to use every combat advantage they can muster, and magic is one of the most potent.
Manybeings on Eora harness magic via Soul Essence, a supernatural force that lives within all things. It takes serious intellect and dedication to properly wield magic, but the results can be extremely powerful. Wizards and Monks can wield the power of their own soul to damage foes and defend themselves, while Druids and Priests can harness the souls of other living matter.

In-game, magic is wielded directly from the hand of the caster, with the potential to dual-wield spells simultaneously. The way in which magic is approached inAvowedhas led to many comparisons toThe Elder Scrollstitles such asSkyrim, although the eccentric casting animations ofAvowed’s magic stand out as unique. The versatility behind this form of wielding magic speaks for itself, and the Xbox Showcase footage ofAvowedshows how elemental magic will be center stage.
Avowed’s Magic and the Elements
Like many fantasy RPGs,Avowed’s magic will entail a huge breadth of potential spells. From summons to shields and direct attacks,Avowed’sspells will be numerous and multipurpose. TheXbox Showcase gameplay footage ofAvowedleaned heavily into the elemental properties that spells will take, showing the player felling enemies with fire, ice, and earth attacks.
This indicates thatAvowed’splayer character has an unusual level of power, being able to control their own soul as well as that of plants and animals. Combos seem to be an important part ofAvowed’scombat, with the player being able to choose between a mix of spells, melee combat, and even pistol combat. This ethos will surely carry forward into the game’s magic system, especially within its elemental spells.
Ice and fire spells could be a textbook combo to inflict upon enemies, whereas earth and potentially wind spells could be an equally powerful combination. The recentAvowedgameplay also showed elemental attacks for melee weapons and potentially even ranged combat, further indicating the importance of elements in-game.
If melee and ranged element attacks can be combined with magical element attacks, then the range of combos withinAvowedcould be endless. It is clear thatthe combat ofAvowedis shaping up to be quite unique and layered, and its elemental attacks are a prime example of the kind of freedom and creativity that will be afforded to the player.
Avowedwill release in 2024 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
