EA and DICE’sBattlefield 2042may have had a rocky launch, but sometimes a broken feature is worth laughing off instead of getting angry about. This case certainly applies to a strange oversight with the game’s vehicle system, allowing for the repair tool to work on something it really should not.

Battlefield 2042, the latest entry in theBattlefieldseries of competitive first-person shooters, takes drastic steps away from previous entries in the franchise. Most feel like its launch was also earlier than it should have been, resulting in a high amount of bugs and oversights.

One oversight, discovered by player dunaike, seems to be a quirk with how the game treats environmental ambient creatures; it turns out that the game’s repair tool works on the penguins in snowy map areas. Normally, thetool is used on friendlyBattlefield 2042vehiclesto help them stay on the field longer, so it working on ambient creatures is a surprising development. A video clip of the bug in action shows that sparks even fly off the penguin as if it is made of metal.

Some players theorize that the penguins mayreuse code fromBattlefield 2042’s vehicles, since they are not technically part of the map itself but are animated entities; perhaps there is a flag that makes vehicles repairable that was not removed for penguins. Either way, the feature certainly does not harm the game competitively unlike other issues, and could be interpreted as a harmless secret. The discovery of this issue also leaves open the question of what else around the environment is repairable, and curious players may have to work fast to find out before this bug is removed.

Whether the repairable penguins should be changed is something of a benign question; it is obviously an oversight, but including such a feature certainly would cause no harm to gameplay, much like theBattlefield 2042’s similarly harmless exploding tables. Unless players find some way to weaponize the penguins, the issue remains one of the lesser problems withBattlefield 2042and will hopefully stay that way.

Battlefield 2042is a disappointing return to the series for many players, and the negative review scores reflect its problems clearly. If the game overall was better, these small issues would be forgivable, but as it stands they are indicative of the larger, unpolished game they come from. Even the funnier issues will not saveBattlefield 2042from being seen as what it is, and onlymajorBattlefield 2042updates with many fixesand changes will bring the game up to the standard set by previous series entries.

Battlefield 2042is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
