Summary
When asked by a fan,Diablo 4Associate Game Director Joseph Piepiora explains the technical reasons why the stash system hasn’t expanded beyond the one additional tab. After releasing a massive update to coincide with Diablo 4’s first season, the community had plenty of criticisms and feedback regarding the changes. The pushback on the changes even causedBlizzard to hold a Fireside chat just days later, confirming that it plans to undo many of the changes.
One of the bigcriticisms with Season 1 is with the limitedDiablo 4inventory space, especially after a new item called Malignant Hearts. With storage already limited, the influx of new gear and items makes this even worse, though it appears to be an issue that Blizzard is aware of, though the technical reasons behind the limited space has seemingly only served to frustrate players.

When asked about the lack of extra stash tabs or even adding an unlimited amount,Diablo 4Associate Game Director Joseph Piepiora confirmed that adding stash tabs creates a lot of memory overhead due to the fact that the game loads every player and their stash items whenever seen in game. So the lack of additional tabs isn’t a storage concern for Blizzard, but more of a performance one. With many players on screen at once, the game may struggle to load each one and their stashes with tons of additional tabs as well. Thankfully, Piepiora did confirm it’s an area Blizzard is trying to improve, but there’s no update on it quite yet.
Naturally, the confirmation didn’t sit well with many reading the thread. There were plenty of comments confused or frustrated by thisDiablo 4Inventory design choiceto load in every character’s stash in the first place. Players feel like details to that level don’t serve any purpose, only to cause performance based issues for many on PC. However, some users attempted to provide some context, indicating that the system could be put in place to prevent item duplication, help player trading, or to improve performance in towns/social spaces. Either way, it’s a system that many argue should be improved.
While Season 1 has disappointed many players to this point, hope certain appears to be on the horizon. In terms of inventory space,Blizzard has confirmed an upcoming patchwill not only add one additional stash tab for now, but a dedicated tab just for gems. To this point, gems have caused plenty of inventory issues with how often they drop, leading players to storing them until they find a time to be used.
Diablo 4is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
