After Bungie split from Activision in 2019, the developer laid out overarching plans for its now self-publishedDestiny 2. The Next Chapter livestream on Jul 01, 2025 revealed more about the ongoing game’s next three expansions:Beyond Light,The Witch Queen, andLightfall, expected to provide content through 2022.Destiny 2has continued to evolve sinceBeyond Lightreleased last November, and one Bungie developer believes the best is yet to come.

Though the latest expansion has been controversial due to a number of decisions made by Bungie, such as the developersunsetting weapons and armor out ofDestiny 2’s loot poolin an attempt to shift the meta, it has also made largely positive steps forward. The launch of the Deep Stone Crypt raid was a solid event, and giving Guardians the ability to wield the Darkness has added a whole new way to approach the looter-shooter - though Bungie is still working on balancing that power.

Destiny 2assistant game director Joe Blackburn said on Twitter today that he feltDestiny’s “Best Days” were ahead in 2020. This feeling was likely muddled by the widespread outbreak of COVID-19 that led toBungie implementing work-from-home ordersalongside other companies, but the announcement of its future content andBeyond Light’s launch showed the studio was still capable. Now, Blackburn said he believes his sentiment “more than ever,” but feels there is going to be a lot of work to get there.

There are two major takeaways from Blackburn’s tweet. First, he warns players that 2021 will be “a little different” forDestiny 2, as Bungie apparently wants to take time to “validate” its plans for the future. However, fans of the ongoing title will be able to expect a “State of Destiny 2021” update during Season 13, one that will presumably address its future plans more concretely.

Season of the Hunt is scheduled to end on February 9, which means the as-yet unnamed Season 13 will likely begin soon after. Bungie has announced a number of changes that will take place upon its release, such asloot from the Moon and Dreaming City coming back toDestiny 2and overall updates to systems like vendor rewards.

Whether or not this upcoming season fixes some of the issues long-timeDestinyfans have had withBeyond Lightthus far, Blackburn’s promise of a major developer update and “Destiny’s Best Days” still to come should give players something to look forward to. In the meantime,Destiny 2receives smaller updates regularly, and today’s weekly reset opened the door for players toearn random rolls for Hawkmoon, the fan-favorite Exotic Hand Cannon.

Destiny 2is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
