Given how successfulthe reboot ofModern Warfarewas for Infinity Ward, it is hardly a surprise that the developer plans to continue fleshing out its new universe. However, one big question that fans have had is the title of the game. TheCall of Duty: Modern Warfarename already confused players in 2019, as a game with that same branding had released in 2007. As such, many were wondering if Infinity Ward and Activision would risk going withCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2for next year’s game, as it would surely bring just as much confusion.

Instead of going with a super lengthy titlelikeCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Infinity Ward is going the simple route. Next year’s game will indeed be namedCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2according to this leak, though it is slightly different. The roman numeral for 2 will serve as the official title, a smart marketing move that should help make next year’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare IIstand out from 2009’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Henderson also claims to have seen the box art, describing it as “amazing.”

As forwhatCall of Duty: Modern Warfare IIwill be about, Henderson believes the story will focus on fighting Drug Cartels, with players likely being part of Task Force 141. This would be a nice change following years of Russia being the main antagonist, and it could let players explore iconic locations like Favela from the originalModern Warfare 2. The rebooted Task Force 141 is confirmed to include Soap, Ghost, and Gaz, with more characters likely to feature in Price’s squad as well.

It will be interesting to see whereTask Force 141’s storygoes, and hopefully the group fares better than it did in 2009. For now, though, it seems like fans have quite a bit to be excited about.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare IIis rumored to release in 2022.
