Space Entertainment Enterprise(S.E.E.), the company co-producing Tom Cruise’s upcoming space film, has announced plans to launch the world’s first space-based entertainment studio and sports arena in the next two years. As a result, filming scenes in zero gravity may soon no longer require the assistance of a green screen, as the entertainment company looks to make groundbreaking achievements in the art of filmmaking and entertainment.

The studio, known as SEE-1, disclosed plans forthe ambitious space station, which hopes to be constructed by December 2024. The station will contain an arena for sports and entertainment and a studio where S.E.E. hopes to produce its content. In addition, the new station intends to host films, television, music, and sports events alongside artists, producers, and creatives who desire to make content in a weightless environment. In unison with events orchestrated by S.E.E., the station also looks to provide the venue and production needs for third-party content and events to be hosted and filmed.

S.E.E. was co-founded by film producers Elena and Dmitry Lesnevsky, producing the second film to be shot in outer space, starring Cruise. Axiom Space will build SEE-1, a company NASA approved in 2020 to make the world’s first commercial space station component ofthe International Space Station. Axiom, led by President/C.E.O. Michael Suffredini, envisions the station hosting private missions, making their involvement understandable. “Adding a dedicated entertainment venue to Axiom Station’s commercial capabilities in the form of SEE-1 will expand the station’s utility as a platform for a global user base and highlight the range of opportunities the new space economy offers,” disclosed Michael Suffredini.

“SEE-1 is an incredible opportunity for humanity to move into a different realm and start an exciting new chapter in space,” stated Dmitry and Elena Lesnevsky. “It will provide a unique, and accessible home for boundless entertainment possibilities in a venue packed with innovative infrastructure which will unleash a new world of creativity.” There is a lot of confidence surrounding the station’s capabilities and impact, but it’s hard to determine if losing the comfort of gravity and familiarity is worth the experience. Richard Johnston, C.O.O. of S.E.E., expressed the following surrounding the news, “From Jules Verne toStar Trek, science fiction entertainment has inspired millions of people around the world to dream about what the future might bring. Creating a next-generation entertainment venue in space opens countless doors to create incredible new content and make these dreams a reality.”

As stated, S.E.E. is the company behind the production of Cruise’s space film, which hoped to be the first project to occur within the microgravity environment. Axiom was supposed to sendCruise and director Doug Limanto the I.S.S., but the trip faced delays due to budgetary issues. However, a Russian film crew successfully made it to the station for a 12-day shooting of their filmThe Challenge. The film focuses on a surgeon trying to operate on a sick cosmonaut in space due to conditions that prevent him from returning to Earth for treatment.

The first steps have occurred, so there is optimism around establishing a solid entertainment environment within the station. The Challenge looks to release late this year, giving audiences their first glimpse at what it looks like to film in the remote station. Time will tell how successful this endeavor will be, but it’s hard to ignore the excitement embedded within the outer expansion of sports and entertainment.
