A new trailer has been released for the upcoming horror gameThe Fridge is Red- a game featuring multiple 4:3 aspect ratio, PS1-era-inspired horror episodes. The trailer depicts the scenes of several episodes with bloody hallways, adventures in snowstorms, creepy children, and of course, a red fridge. With the trailer, the developer 5WORD Team announced the release date for the game.

A young girl, Lori, is missing after a tragic loss in the family. In the game, the player assumes the role of Frank, Lori’s father, who’s trying to get her daughter back. Not everything is alright with him, though, as he thinks that all he can do is sit in a chair and keep looking at the red fridge in the basement, or else something bad is going to happen. The game sends players adventuring in90s horror-inspired pixelated worlds that feature psychological fear in several distinct episodes. It’s an anthology series in a horror game with interesting themes and experimental gameplay, a sort of old-school horror game version ofBlack Mirror.

The trailer includes short clips from different scenes that don’t seem to be in the order of the game’s timeline. It starts in a basement with a blizzard striking the windows open and a ride through the snowstorm, followed by a walk in a semi-desolate office building with odd storerooms and eyes staring through the elevator buttons, and bloody hallways of what looks like a school. Another scene is a creepy church with zombie-like humanoids staring at the player, which might be tied to a later scene with a pile of corpses below what seems like a church bell. While there’s limited game sound on the trailer with just an occasional sound effect, both the music and the few sound effects that can be heard fit the 90s-erasoundscape of a horror game.

The trailer also features Lori drawing in front of a broken TV. She is more prominently featured in the second part of the trailer, in a paper puppet animation played on an old TV set. The puppet animation, titled Lori Story, goes through the history of a seemingly happy family of three. It suddenly turns dark as the mother seems to pass away and is carried off by shadow people while the father is drinking, eventually leaving the child alone in the home.

The game has strong influences from the 4:3 world of the 90s, is reminiscent of games like the originalSilent Hill, and has even a similar feel to a horror game classicAlone in the Dark, which issoon to be reimagined with a new storyline. It uses the grainy image with a clever vintage filter to create an atmosphere that is familiar to the aforementioned titles.

The game includes mature content in the form of violence throughout the game, and the developer reveals a funny, albeit brutal detail about it - losing a level means getting beaten by the refrigerator, which might be one of thebest deaths in a horror game. For those that would like to have a taste of the game before the release date, the publisher has released a demo version via Steam.

The Fridge is Redwill be available on PC on September 27.
