Bungie’s bigDestiny 2livestream, The Next Chapter, was only really only expected to showcase the new big fall expansion, now confirmed to be titledBeyond Light, as well asSeason 11. However, Bungie had a lot more surprises in store for fans of its looter-shooter series, confirming the titles of the next two major story expansions, which are planned to release in 2021 and 2022.
During the livestream, Bungie confirmed that the 2021 expansion forDestiny 2is entitledThe Witch Queen, whereas the 2022 expansion is currently calledLightfall. Fans should note that these are working titles, and it’s possible that Bungie will end up changing the names come launch. Specific details about what these newDestiny 2expansions will entail are unavailable at the time of this writing, but past expansion could give fans a pretty good idea.

Typically,Destiny 2expansions add new story missions, Strikes, and multiplayer maps. They’re usually fairly significant, and add considerably more content than the seasonal events. But fans shouldn’t expect more specific details any time soon. It’s unlikely that more information onDestiny 2: The Witch Queenwill come until next year, especially since the next expansion,Destiny 2: Beyond Light, hasn’t even launched yet.
Come 2021 and 2022, the landscape ofDestiny 2will be changed considerably. Not only will the story expansions add considerable new content toDestiny 2, but Bungie is also planning on bringing back classicDestiny 1content through what it’s calling the Destiny Content Vault. The Destiny Content Vault will allow Bungie to cycle out older content inDestiny 2that isn’t being played much by fans, while also bringing back old-school content that was popular in theoriginalDestiny.
Furthermore, the next-generation versions ofDestiny 2will be available in 2021 and 2022. Fans will be able to upgrade thePS5 and Xbox Series X versions ofDestiny 2for free, with all of their content carrying over. It was also confirmed thatDestiny 2will have cross-gen support, meaning that PS5 players will be able to play with those on PS4, and Xbox Series X users can play with those still playing on Xbox One.
With these future plans in place, Bungie is showing its commitment toDestiny 2for the long term. This means that fans shouldn’t expect to seeDestiny 3any time soon, but it should reassure them that they can continue investing their time inDestiny 2for at least the next couple of years.
Destiny 2is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
