Media Molecule’s mini-dev-kit-in-a-box,Dreams,has already produced some truly outstanding player-created content. The creation tools found within the game are deep and allow players the opportunity tolet their imaginations run wild. But, just what happens to the finished product someone creates?
Coming from the same minds that brought playersLittleBigPlanet, the team behindDreamshas put together an impressive tool kit that took years to finally make it to the market. The long development cycle appears to be worth it, as the game has been highly praised, and the developers have said they will besupportingDreamswith post-launch content.

The one big question that many players have relates to what can be done with their creations after players “publish” their work in the game. Some creators areusing theDreamsplatform to land jobs in game development, but if that isn’t the route creators are looking to take, the development team has released a few bullet points covering just what can be done with a finished product. Clarifying who owns an original creation inDreams, the answer is simple; the owner is the player who created it. They are free to do what they wish with that creationifthey are using their creation for personal use. Media Molecule explains that personal usage refers to using the creation in an artwork or music portfolio, in a collage, or a design for a t-shirt. The usage just cannot be for profit.
With some ambitious projects already popping upon the platform, Media Molecule also takes time to address what players can do if they wish to use their creation for business purposes—ie. publishing their created content with the intent to sell it as a product. Here Media Molecule appears to be trying to figure this out as well, stating that “creators can submit an application to useDreamsfor a specific project.” Players must provide Media Molecule with details about the project, including a time frame for completion, and be willing to work closely with Media Molecule during the process. It is also only available to Early Access Members “in good standing” at this time.
While some of those Early Access folks may have a head start, and have dumped hundreds of hours into the game already, it won’t be long before players just getting their hands on the game now will be producing their own spectacular creations.
With Media Molecule providing some clarification on what can be done with creations made in the game, players who were unsure of just what they owned inthe critically acclaimed gamenow have a better sense of where ownership lies.
