Summary

Nicholas Maggio’s directorial debut film and classic American Neo-Noir homage,Mob Land, will release digitally and on Demand on August 25 after its theatrical release on August 4. Ahead of then, Saban Films has released a short movie clip that teases the face-off betweenJohn Travolta’s character and the titular mob.

For the uninitiated,Mob Landfeatures John Travolta (Pulp Fiction, Grease) as Sheriff Bodie Davis, Stephen Dorff (Blade) as mob enforcer Clayton Minor, Shiloh Fernandez (Evil Dead,Evil Dead: The Game) as Shelby Conners, Kevin Dillon (“Entourage”) as Shelby’s cousin Trey, and Ashley Benson (“Pretty Little Liars”) as Carolina Conners. After a pill mill robbery gone wrong in a small rural town ravaged by addiction, the film explores the action, intrigue, and conflict between a distraught hard-working man who just wanted his part of the American dream, the mob’s involvement in a massive drug affair, and a righteous sheriff.

TheMob Land clip,as seen below, shows Travolta’s character learning more about the events that took place after the pill mill robbery, setting up his conflict for the film, at a fitting small-town gas station. The doctor of the pill mill, responsible for helping spread the opioid epidemic, wants immunity because he alleges the outfit has connections as far as aNew Orleansmafia. The state apparently doesn’t want to get involved, with hints of the D.E.A. coming down on the small town. They also mention another witness, possible evidence, and strangulation by a lamp cord, among other gruesome details.

As a whole, it’s clear this scene is rather dialogue heavy, but it serves to furtherMob Land’s core conflict while showingTravolta’s acting chops, not that they need any further proving. But the scene also does a fine job of portraying small details and attitudes of a small Southern town, especially one facing constant drug-related problems.

Ahead of its digital release, would-beMob Landviewers and/or general John Travolta fans should be aware that its runtime is 111 minutes. It is rated R for its gratuitous depiction of strong violence, use of guns, strong language, and nudity, none of which is surprising for aNeo Noir inspired film.

Mob Landreleased in theaters on August 4 and releases digitally and On Demand on August 25.
