Nintendo’sSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatehas a huge collection of characters from all across video game history, and that roster continues to grow. Fans recently took to social media to talk about thefirst anniversary ofFire Emblem: Three House’s Byleth joiningSmash Bros., capping offUltimate’s first Fighters Pass, andFinal Fantasy 7’s Sephiroth is the most recent addition as of this writing. That has inspired many an artist to offer their own takes on the characters, and Twitter user eternalflamebry recently kicked off an ambitious project to do just that.
Super Smash Bros.roster drawing projects are not uncommon, and in fact artist Daniel Cortes began todraw everySmash Bros.character in the style ofCupheadlast year. The “Super Smash Heroes” project by eternalflamebry is similar, but instead aims to recreate every fighter as a Marvel or DC Comics superhero with whom they share some traits.

This ongoing project was announced January 9, and has encapsulated six fighters thus far: Mario as Superman, Donkey Kong as Hulk, Link as Green Arrow, Samus as Iron Man, Dark Samus as Venom, and Yoshi as Plastic Man. EachSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatecharacter has been split into a comic universe based on their official number, and eternalflamebry plans to upload new images on Mondays and Saturdays, so fans of his work should keep an eye out.
Before this, eternalflamebry reimagined Disney Heroines as video game characters, for instance drawing Moana in the style ofThe Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. However, “Super Smash Heroes” is considered a successor to his “Super Smash Styles” project, which retooled the (current) roster of 85 fighters into unique styles - such as Ken in the look ofJohnny Bravo. That will continue with the next three DLC fighters, he said, and afterSephiroth came toSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatehe was redrawn in the style of the shonen animeBleach.
It’s unknown which franchises will fill the remaining DLC slots. However, that has not stopped people from trying topredict newSuper Smash Bros.fighters, or express an interest in who they may be interested in seeing. FormerHalocomposer Martin O’Donnell even wants to help add Master Chief following Microsoft reps Banjo and Kazooie, as well asMinecraft’s Steve.
Given the scope ofSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate’s roster, not including cut content such asDragonite originally being a summon using the Poke Ball, the possibilities are seemingly endless. This should give fans room to speculate until Nintendo makes its official announcements, and artists like eternalflamebry will no doubt be waiting to see what comes next.
