TheFar Cryseries’s villains have been a constant evolution of mad-cap men and women with silver tongues. The latest title,Far Cry 5,was a slight departure from the classic formula, but the upcomingFar Cry 6looks like it will return to the roots that made the franchise so popular (while having its own twists). Taking place in the fictional Yara, players will be tasked with liberating the country from the oppressive Castillo regime. El Presidente Anton Castillo seeks to keep his home island safe from outside influence inFar Cry 6, as he had previously seen the people and intellectual property of Yara abused. Castillo seeks to empower his people through their own resources.
WhileFar Cry 6has shown a few trailers so far, its time during theUbisoft Forward event at E3 2021gave players some new details on what to expect from this next entry. As it turns out,Far Cry 6’spost launch content will bring back some of the fans' favorite villains. At the Ubisoft showcase, the game announced that it would bringing back Pagan Min, Joseph Seed, and Vaas as playable characters as a part of the game’s season pass DLC. These new experiences will likely add a new depth to their characters.

Far Cry’s Iconic Villains
There are few series that have nailed the bad guys likeFar Cry.While they are all typically dictators and men hungry for power, their vast geological differences make each new game a unique experience. The truly iconic villains started withFar Cry 3’sinsane Vaasand the series has been attempting to improve on that formula. Pagan Min was a noticeable change, including his discipline, to the villain formula inFar Cry 4.Joseph Seed was a new kind of religious dictator in America, but most ofFar Cry 5focused on taking down his siblings.
Far Cry 6’s Playable Villains
Ubisoft hasn’t been shy in releasing continuous updates aboutFar Cry 6as fans get closer to the October 7 release date. However, no one was expecting the announcement that came as a part of Ubisoft’s E3 2021 showcase. After a trailer showcasing some of the worst of Anton Castillo’s impulses, the dev introduced a new kind of mode that will be available inFar Cry 6.In this new mode, players will be able to take on the role of one of three of the series' past villains, in what seems like an evolution ofFar Cry 5’s anthology DLC.
This new mode will likely open up the characters and allow players to experience some of the past games through the eyes of the dictators. A few scenes have already been shown, such as Pagan Min with his family and Vaas being thrown down a hole by Jason BrodyfromFar Cry 3.This will most likely add a new layer to how the villains are viewed and will give some primary context to why they act the way they do.

During the trailer, the words “The Mind is a Dangerous Place” appear on screen, likely meaning players will fully understand and sympathize with these character’s psychoses. But immediately after this,Joseph Seed shoves an Eden’s Gate Biblein someone’s mouth and uses it to snap their neck, so jury’s still out on how much players will come to understand and relate to these villains.
Far Cry 6launches October 7, on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
