Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Square Enix has releasedFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeearly in some regions. Physical copies ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeare now in the hands of various players in Australia and Europe, and these players have discovered that the upcoming JRPG has an absolutely massive file size.
As it turns out, theFinal Fantasy 7 Remakefile size on PS4 is a staggering 100GB. For players with the original 500GB PS4, this means thatFinal Fantasy 7 Remakewould take up a fifth of their storage space alone. Needless to say, there will likely be manyFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeplayers that will need to make room on their hard drives if they hope to play the game, but there’s a good reason why theFF7 Remakefile sizeis so massive.

In a recent interview with US Gamer,Final Fantasy 7 Remakeco-director Naoki Hamaguchiexplained why the game’s file size is 100GB. According to Hamaguchi, the reason whyFinal Fantasy 7 Remakehas a 100GB file size is because the development team decided to create unique assets for different areas in the game instead of re-using assets like they normally would. “[…] we designed assets like the backgrounds, [background music], and characters per location, which allowed for a unique gameplay experience in each area, even from a game design perspective.”
Having completely unique assets throughout the game should makeFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeeven more visually impressive than it would have been otherwise, and will no doubt be appreciated by some players. Others may be annoyed that they will have to make so much room on their PS4 systems just to play the game, especially sinceFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeis just the first part of a planned episodic experience.
Due to the sheer size and scope of theFinal Fantasy 7story,Square Enixhas elected to releaseFinal Fantasy 7 Remakein parts, with each part as long as a full video game. Presumably, these futureFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeepisodes will be just as big as the original release, so fans will have to make alotmore space on their consoles in the future.
Final Fantasy 7 Remakelaunches on April 10 for PS4.
