Sonic Frontiershas proven to be a particularly divisive game, with some praising Sega’s attempt an open worldSonicand others coming away completely unimpressed. ProfessionalSonic Frontiersreview scoresrun the gamut, though the game appears to have been warmly received bySonic the Hedgehogfans. In fact,Sonic Frontiers' user scores on Metacritic are all mostly positive, with an overall rating of 8.5 for the Switch and PC versions and the lowest coming in at a respectable 7.8 for the Xbox One version at the time of this writing.

However, there’s now some controversy overSonic Frontiers' Metacritic user scores. Popular video game YouTuber videogamedunkey, aka Dunkey, recently uploaded aSonic Frontiersreview of his own that heavily criticized the game. The end of the video compares theSonic FrontiersMetacritic user score to those of critically-acclaimed games likeElden Ring,Red Dead Redemption 2, and theSonicfranchise’s ownSonic Mania. DespiteSonic Frontiershaving significantly lower professional review scores compared to those games, its overall user score rating was equal to or greater than their user score ratings.

This has caused some backlash online, with some gamers now taking to theSonic FrontiersMetacritic pages to cause trouble. There are some disgruntledSonic the Hedgehogfans who aren’t happy about Dunkey’sSonic Frontiersreview, thinking it to be nitpicking and biased, and have started making fake Dunkey fan accounts to review bomb the game and paint the YouTuber’s following in a bad light. On the other hand, there also appears to be some legitimate Dunkey fans who have decided to review bomb the game after the video in an attempt to bring theSonic Frontiersuser score down.

Dunkey took to Twitter to address the situation, saying he never intended to “send review bombers” to theSonic FrontiersMetacritic pages. He also pointed out howSonic Frontiersis still getting more positive reviewsthan negative ones despite the review bombing efforts. “I just wanted to make an entertaining video on a game I didn’t really like, and I was shocked by the user scores so I included it. I can’t be alone in feeling crazy when seeing them,” Dunkey said on Twitter.

One criticism that has been levied against Dunkey’s review is how itspoilsSonic Frontiersby showing the final boss and other endgame elements. Others have accused the YouTuber of deliberately trying to make the game look bad. Regardless, this isn’t the first time that a Dunkey review has drummed up controversy, and it’s unlikely to be the last time.

Aside from being one of YouTube’s most popular gaming content creators, Dunkey is also an aspiring gaming publisher himself.Dunkey and his wife Leah recently launched Bigmode, which specializes in publishing indie games.
