The official gameplay launch trailer opens with the reminder that Batman has passed on before transitioning into a series of explosions, weighty combat, team-up moves, and finally, the aforementioned villain reveals. The villains that made their debut this time around were the Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Harley Quinn, Clayface, and what appears to be a brute version of Talonaccompanied by The Court of Owls. To top off this spectacle was a cover of the song “Heads Will Roll” played over the whole less than two-minute-long video.

WhileGotham Knightsis launching in just a couple of weeks, it’s clear the developers at WB Games Montreal are aiming to createtheir own version of the Batman universeseparate from any already existing one. It has been made clear through its dedicated site’s FAQ that the developer is not connecting this game to theBatman: Arkhamseries in any way. This was made even clearer by the trailer featuring the monstrous version of Clayface, Mr. Freeze armed with a mechanical spider, and the inclusion of the often-forgotten Court of Owls all of whom don’t match the look of theirArkhamcounterparts.

This creative direction should result in a more original experience for players but there is more at stake than just fan approval.Gotham Knights’success or failure could impact how the publisher approaches 2023’sSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguewhich is a similar game being developed by Rocksteady Studios. Either way, it won’t be long until players can dive into the gritty world of Gotham Knights for themselves.

Gotham Knightsreleases on October 21st, 2022 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
