In her recent memoir,I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette McCurdy fromiCarlyandSam & Catis making her bad experiences on set known and digs deep into her experiences with disordered eating that stemmed from her abuse during her early childhood. One of the main excerpts from the memoir that is receiving major attention is the inappropriate behavior McCurdy has claimed she faced at the hands of “The Creator,” who many are assuming to be Dan Schneider. McCurdy claimed that during her time working under “The Creator” he pressured her to drink underage, massaged her while on the job, and even photographed her in a bikini during a Nickelodeon wardrobe fitting. She also went on to reveal that she was offered $300,000 by Nickelodeon for her silence about what she endured, which she declined.
In the memoir, she dived deeper into these experiences as she paints the conversation where she was forced to drink alcohol for the first time at age 18 with “The Creator,” who convinced her to drink by comparing her to the cast of another show on the network. She also recounts the time she was massaged by him as he teased her about a spin-off series he was creating for her, which wasSam & Cat, where McCurdystarred beside Ariana Grande. Recalling both these conversations, she explains her thought process and how she was easily manipulated by “The Creator” as he dangled job opportunities over her head.
As a young girl struggling with body image and being the main breadwinner in her family, McCurdy was exploited by Nickelodeon and the network failed to protect her on set from behavior that can be deemed predatory, all for the sake of money. This revelation has been very disappointing and disturbing to many fans who watched the shows McCurdy appeared on, not thinking she was dealing with many different types of abuse behind the scenes at the hands of both studio executives and her own mother.
