Like with most multiplayer games, players should be careful about which platform they buyTribes of Midgardfor, especially if they want to play with their friends. But what platforms will it be available for, and is it coming to the Nintendo Switch?
Tribes of Midgard’s Switch Status
At launch, the only platformsTribes of Midgardwill be available for are Playstation 4, Playstation 5, and PC. The developers, Norsefell games, have not stated any plans for a Nintendo Switch port.
This doesn’t mean a future Switch port is impossible. While a game likeNew Worldis probably too graphically intensivefor the switch,Tribes of Midgardis focused on smart art direction instead of cutting-edge visuals. It’s easy to imagine a slightly visually scaled-back version for Nintendo’s hardware.
Tribes of Midgardis also a live service game, with two seasons of planned content already under development. This means, ideally, Norsefell games will have plenty of time during the game’s long lifespan to work on extra ports.
Why Tribes of Midgard Should Be on Switch
A switch port wouldn’t just be good for players, it’s also in Norsefell Games' best interest to port the game to more consoles.
A live service game is more likely to succeed if it has a large player base to support it. More platforms means a larger pool of possible players, and the Switch’s audience already hasa proven interest in top-down action RPGs likeTribes of Midgard.
But beyond that, it might be dangerous for the console version of the game to stay a PlayStation exclusive. Sony already has a major Norse fantasy gamewith the newGod of Warseries, and it could pull away some ofTribes of Midgard’s Audience.
While a Switch port feels likely, it probably won’t arrive for the first couple of seasons. A live service game’s launch window is always focused on fixing bugs and balance, and working on another version could get in the way of that process. ButTribes of Midgardseems like a perfect fit for the Switch, and a port should eventually become a priority.
Tribes of Midgardreleases on PC, Playstation 4, and Playstation 5 on July 27th, 2021.
