Jupiter’s Legacy, theNetflixanswer to Amazon Prime’sThe Boys, premiered on the streaming service less than a month ago, but its future has apparently already been decided. Netflix has reportedly decided to go in a different direction and it appears there won’t be a second season.
Jupiter’s Legacyfeatured a grittier look at the superhero life in its first eight-episode season, though even with that grittier look, itstood out fromThe Boys. While the Amazon program showed that most of who the world sees as heroes are really deeply troubled anti-heroes,Jupiter’s Legacy’s protagonists were very earnest. In fact, as the conclusion of season 1 showed, it appeared as though their earnestness was their eventual undoing. However, fans of the graphic novel-based story will apparently not get to see just where the season-ending plot twist will take them.

Millarworld announced that Netflix has officially canceledJupiter’s Legacy, though there’s a bit of a caveat. The streaming service isn’tmoving away from Mark Millar’s workentirely. Instead, the platform is going to pull from several different stories in what is collectively referred to as Millarworld by the writer’s fans. As such, Netflix plans to makeJupiter’s Legacyan anthology series all based on Millar’s graphic novels, withSupercrooksgetting the first bite at the apple with a live-action adaptation.
While Millar still has work to do with Netflix, the entire cast ofseason 1 ofJupiter’s Legacyhas been released from their contracts. Some industry insiders believe Netflix originally planned to give the series much more than just one season, considering it spent more than $30 million outright in order to gain the rights to Millarworld. The streaming platform reportedly ended up spending more than $200 million in the production of the superhero drama, according to THR’s Borys Kit.
Despite the rather large outpouring of money, it doesn’t appear as ifJupiter’s Legacyever really caught on. It did manage to rank amongNetflix’s most-watched programsa few times, but critically, it was met with mostly negative reviews. The program netted just a 45 rating on Metacritic and a “rotten” 38 rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, the show’s first attempt at a replacement isn’t that much of a move away fromJupiter’s Legacy’s source material.Supercrooksfollows a band of supervillains and other baddies who team up in order to try and pull off the “heist of the century.” Netflix also has several other Millarworld titles in various stages of production.
