Kirby and the Forgotten Landis making big changes to one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises. It’s shifting Kirby from 2D to fully explorable 3D environments, a first for the pink ball. But that’s not all that Nintendo plans to change inKirby and the Forgotten Land. A new gameplay trailer shown during Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct revealed that Kirby himself will have a few new tricks up his sleeve. Not only will Kirby be able to copy enemy abilities, but he’ll also be able to swallow objects and use them in unique and powerful ways.
The newKirby and the Forgotten Landtrailerfeatures Kirby devouring an assortment of large objects and then using their respective traits as power-ups. Perhaps the most significant of these power-ups features Kirby swallowing a vehicle. Not only does this transform Kirby into the shape of a car, but it allows him to travel around as if he was a wheeled vehicle himself.

Kirby eats a diverse selection of objects during the new trailer, beyond just the vehicle. He eats a vending machine, which allows him to spit cans of juice out of his mouth at enemies, a traffic cone, which Kirby uses to break a hole in a leaky pipe, a scissor-lift, that allows Kirby to reach elevated locations, and more. Rings, lightbulbs, flying archs, and other objects will be found spread throughout theworld of the Forgotten Landfor Kirby to add to his arsenal.
One last interesting aspect of this new feature sees Kirby hooking himself up to a water pipe and filling himself up like a water balloon.Mario Sunshinefanswill then appreciate what Kirby can do, as he uses the water in his belly to spray down gunk that may get in his way. It shows that Nintendo is open to getting creative with this new game mode.
The official name of the newKirby and the Forgotten Landgame mode is called Mouthful Mode. The jokes write themselves, but overall it’s still a unique feature for theKirbygamethat should bring out its mysterious setting in a creative way.
Altogether,Kirby and the Forgotten Landcontinues to surprise and captivate with its early trailers. Whether it’s the3D explorable world, the post-apocalyptic setting, or the new Mouthful Mode powers for Kirby, Nintendo’s showing that it has big plans for the pink puffball that few could ever have predicted. Who knows what other surprises await Kirby fans when the Nintendo Switch exclusive finally arrives.
