An eagle-eyed fan has discovered an interesting connection between Insomniac’sMarvel’s Spider-Manand the reveal trailer forMarvel’sSpider-Man 2from 2021. This discovery may alleviate the concerns that some may have aboutMarvel’s Spider-Man 2being set in New York again.
Thereveal trailer forSpider-Man 2at the PlayStation Showcasein 2021 was a very important piece of promotion for the upcoming sequel. Reddit user KaZ_02 posted a slideshow of images comparing the location used in the 2021 trailer to the same area ofNew York City fromMarvel’s Spider-Man. The first two images of the slideshow establish that the area is in the Greenwich section of the city, and the rest of the images showcase the minor differences in detail between the original game and the sequel. Most of these details are smaller, with slightly changed locations of certain buildings, while other changes are more stark, like adding a store named Mikal’s on one of the street corners. The slideshow’s final image is a collage highlighting all the differences between both games in red outlines.
KaZ_02 assumed that the location was created for the reveal trailer, but after some detective work on their part, they realized that this same area was in the original game. The biggest addition to this spot ofNew York City inSpider-Man 2is Mikal’s, which KaZ_02 speculates may be an important landmark or connected to a new character in the story. The street signs outside Mikal’s have been changed as well. In the original game, the street signs read “Goodman and Greenwich” and in the sequel, they read “Greenwich and Morton.”
Some fans of the upcoming sequel are worried thatSpider-Man 2’s map will feel the sameas before. Similar concerns were raised for other recent sequels, such asGod of War: RagnarokandThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. As video games get more expensive to produce, studios seem more willing to reuse previous maps to save on cost. Hopefully, inSpider-Man 2, New York City will be filled with detailed changes around every corner so that the city has a fresh feel to it.
