One of the biggest criticisms thatFallout 4received was that its dialogue choices did not necessarily match what was being said, andMarvel’s Midnight Sunsseems to have followed suit.Marvel’s Midnight Sunsfeatures tons of dialogue, as didFallout 4,and they both have a fully voiced protagonist that will speak chosen prompts. These choices help shape the player character and can impact their relationship with other characters, and that makes these choices a major part of the character progression.

These dialogue choices are so important that players probably want what is said to match the blurb they chose, but the dialogue inMarvel’s MidnightSunsdoes not always do this. Sometimes players may make the Hunter behave in unexpected ways, and something players thought would be well received by an NPC ends up actually hurting their relationship. The same problem that RPG fans noticed inFallout 4’s dialogue seems to be very prevalent withinMarvel’s Midnight Suns.

Fallout 4’s Dialogue Choices Never Seemed to Match the Dialogue

Fallout 4made the controversial decision to replace the classic silent protagonist with a voiced one. Instead of selecting from a large list of written dialogue choices that could significantly change the trajectory of a social interaction,Fallout 4featured a simple dialogue wheelmade up of four different options. This meant that players had far less freedom in how they interacted with other characters, and some players felt like it limited the overall creative potential of the game. What made it worse for players was the fact that the dialogue options didn’t always match what was actually being said.

Social interaction is a major part of Bethesda RPGs, and it helps players shape the character that they want to be in the world, which means that players want accurate dialogue choices. However, upon booting upFallout 4players were met with a dialogue wheel that made it hard to predict what was going to be said with every choice. Each of the four options only included a couple words, and what the player character said was often unexpected. This form of dialogue broke many players' immersion, as their character no longer felt like theirs, and it proved so controversial thatStarfieldreverts to a silent protagonist.

Midnight Suns Dialogue

Midnight Suns Seems to Follow in Fallout 4’s Footsteps

As players fight Lilith’s forces, there are loads of dialogue choices thrown at them. These choices can affect how the other heroes see them, and can affect the alignment of their character. Almost every side activity and character interaction will feature a couple different dialogue choices that can impact how these situations play out. They can either grow closer to the various heroes, or they can push the heroes away. While it should be pretty easy to figure out what will happen when players select a certain option, the spoken dialogue can sometimes be entirely different.

There are some situations where a player will select what they believe is a calm and collected response, and the Hunter will say that line of dialogue very aggressively. It can be very off-putting, and can hurt immersion, as it did inFallout 4. Sometimes, dialogue choices do not even match what the Hunter says and that can lead to confusion and head-scratching moments as the interaction goes in an entirely different direction. While these mismatched responses do not necessarily ruin the experience, it would be nice if the dialogue always lined up with what was chosen asbuilding friendships is a core part ofMidnight Suns.

WhileMarvel’s Midnight Sunsdialogue choicesare not as simple or mismatched asFallout 4’s dialogue was, the player character will still often say things that do not match what was chosen. Both games put a heavy emphasis on dialogue, and that means that both games need to get those dialogue choices right. Instead, the dialogue in both seems to falter, which can lead to a less satisfying experience.
