Just like her character,Vellani is a big Marvel fan. The series directors said that her MCU knowledge rivaled that of Kevin Feige. I was given a very professional tool to write what is essentially my own fan fiction.”

In the comics, Ms. Marvel gets her powers from being an Inhuman, which is why some fans do not like the idea of her being a mutant instead. Vellani responded, “I want to make it very, very clear that we are not reconning her Inhuman origin. That’s a part of Kamala’s identity that Marvel editorial and myself would very much like to keep and protect.” Vellani continued, “Our book will absolutely reflect all those core themes of identity that the Ms. Marvel comics have consistently explored — only now there’s a whole new label that Kamala has to learn to accept. It’s going to be pretty crazy.”

Some fans had theories that the character’s comic book death would be used to give her the MCU version’s powers when she was inevitably brought back. Although the character will still seem to keep her original comic book powers,Ms. Marvel will become a mutantlike her MCU counterpart. This has become a controversial choice among comic book readers, but Vellani’sMs. Marvelcomic will hopefully win some of them over.

Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant#1 will be released on Jul 17, 2025.
