With the upcomingChrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Editionready to arrive soon, Square Enix has released a collection of new images to compare the remaster with the original title. These newChrono Crossscreenshot comparisonsinclude the in-game graphics, as well as some of the illustrations that accompany the title and act as portrait art during dialogues.
This new selection of screenshots comes courtesy of the Square Enix Japan website, where the developer often shares its latest news for content not deemed major enough to spread worldwide. However, withChrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Editionlaunching soon, it is strange to see Square Enix not eagerly push these comparison images to fans everywhere.

The collection of images is limited, but they do showcase how the remaster compares to the original across a series of different gameplay moments with varying levels of graphical fidelity. One of the most notable improvements interestingly comes with the illustrations for characters, which only appear in-game as portrait art during conversations. It’s an admittedly small change, but it can go a long way to makingChrono Crosscharactersand their designs stand out on HD consoles the can output at higher resolutions than the PlayStation that the original title released on.

Another important comparison that stands out from the rest is the issue of how the font will look in theRadical Dreamers Edition, especially when held against the original. Font has been a point of contention with some of Square Enix’s previous ports and re-releases, like therecently releasedFinal Fantasy Pixel Remaster, with many fans condemning the mobile-friendly fonts used even on PC and console. Altogether, the font is only one of the several examples of how this new remaster ofChrono Crosswill look better than the original ever could have on the PlayStation.
These new comparisons could reinforce the decision of gamers who are already prepared to purchase theRadical Dreamers Editionwhen it arrives later this week. However, it may not be enough to satisfy players who continue to believe theChrono Crossremake rumorsthat this new version will only minimally bring the classic title up to modern console standards. Still, this upcoming remaster looks like it might soon be the definitive way to play the game, especially considering that it will be released on multiple consoles and PC, as well as bring exclusive content outside of Japan for the first time.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Editionreleases on April 7 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
