Star Wars, as a cross-media franchise, is going through a major transition. This is most obviously represented by the ending of the newStar Warstrilogy with the release ofStar Wars: Rise of the Skywalker. However, there’s a transition going on in video games as well. The success of Respawn’sStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderand the strugglingStar Wars Battlefrontfranchise is leading to new strategies as well. Few could have predicted the latestStar Warsrumor, however.

According to a report from Ziro.hu, Disney is preparing for a new era ofStar Warsnamed Project Luminous. Project Luminous would be the start of a brand newStar Warsfilm series set 300-400 years before the start of theSkywalker saga. But while the movies will be the showcase of theStar Warsfrachise, a video game is apparently set to kick off the new era. The report’s anonymous source states that aStar Warsgame planned to launch in 2021 will be the “first product” of Project Luminous.

Project Luminous will apparently grow from that first project into a series of films said to be more akin to theMarvel Cinematic Universethan the trilogy-centric series that came before. That means Disney could run several ongoing movie series that cross over and come together for major events. The Marvel Universe notably never directly crossed over with video games, thoughBattlefront 2came close, so it’s unclear if more video game crossovers would be planned for the future.

As for details about the video game that would kick offProject Luminous, there’s nothing to be said. It’s unclear if the video game even exists, let alone what studio might be making it or what kind of game it might be. That doesn’t mean the possibility isn’t there, however. Both DICE and Respawn could be working on newStar Warsvideo games, or another studio altogether.

On one hand, it would be no surprise that moreStar Warsvideo gamesare in development. ThoseStar Warsgames, or at least some of them, are undoubtedly going to be related to whatever newStar Warsseries that Disney puts together. While it’s not impossible for such a game to kick off a new series, so to speak, it can likely be assumed that it still wouldn’t be required viewing material. It’d be inessential, though it’d certainly be cool.

Given that this is an anonymously sourced rumor, however, it’s best to take it with a grain of salt. There are moreStar Warsgames coming eventually. Hopefully, more news about them will be shared in 2020.
