Earlier this week, Nintendo released anotherSwitchfirmware update, titled version 16.0.1, to users all around the globe. The update forNintendo Switchconsoles arrived over a month after version 16.0.0, the previous major update, was released for the system and made some adjustments to the internal operations of the Switch’s OS.The firmware update to the Switch’s operating system came amid a controversial time for Nintendo. In just a few days, the Wii U and 3DS versions of the Nintendo eShop will permanently close. This led to a vast number of gamers and content creatorsscrambling to buy as many eShop games as possibleon those systems before closing time, whether their intent is game preservation or personal use. While some games from those systems have made their way to the Switch in some capacity, some titles such asThe Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HDwill be inaccessible digitally, and the prices of used physical copies will be affected as a result. Whether the closure of the Wii U and 3DS eShops will force Nintendo to make more ports to the Switch in the short term remains to be seen.RELATED:Zelda: Breath of the Wild Explorer’s Guide Now Available to EverybodyAs for the Switch itself, firmware version 16.0.1 includes “general system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.” While this means very little to the average Nintendo Switch user, a known dataminer on Twitter named OatmealDome said that there’s a little more to the update than at first glance. In their Twitter thread, OatmealDome stated that, just asfirmware version 16.0.0 did in February, some adjustments were made to the language filters within the Switch’s operating system. Namely, some words were removed from certain language filters that were originally blocked in error, and other language filter adjustments were made. Plus, some additional bug fixes were made to the BCAT system module, though OatmealDome could not pinpoint how.
Switch users can ensure their console is up-to-date by going to System Settings, scrolling down to System, selecting System Update, and following any prompts that show up. The release of Switch firmware version 16.0.1 coincided withversion 1.1.1 of the Nintendo Switch Online Game Boyapp, which saw an odd description text change forKirby’s Dream Land 2. The change made the descriptions of Rick, Kine, and Coo slightly more verbose than before.
While the recent updates to the Switch firmware may seem underwhelming, the Switch itself turned six years old on March 3. Withrumors of Nintendo’s next consolecontinuing to make the rounds, only time will tell what plans Nintendo has next for the Switch and other devices down the line.
