Ubisoft released sevenFar Crygames between 2012 and 2021. October 7 will hence mark the first two-year period without a new series installment in over a decade. Nevertheless, Ubisoft recentlyhinted thatFar Cry 7is now in the early stages of development.

Earlier today, firstFar Cry 7story and gameplay details leaked online, courtesy of Insider Gaming. Reacting to that scoop, Universo Nintendo’s Felipe Lima took to Twitter to report thatFar Cry 7will reach the Switch 2 simultaneously with its other target platforms. That day-one release on Nintendo’s next-gen console is still ostensibly far away, not least because the game is believed to have only entered pre-production in the second half of 2023. For reference,Far Cry 6took around five years to complete, and its sequel isn’t likely to be comparatively quicker to the market given how AAA game development cycles continue to get longer.
Far Cry 7isn’t the only big-budget third-party game that Lima believes will release on Nintendo hardware in the foreseeable future; earlier this week, the Brazil-based reporter unearthed a regulatory classification suggesting thatRed Dead Redemption 2is getting ported to the Switch. However, given how Rockstar’s hit game is even taxing on much more powerful hardware, there’s a possibility that the newly surfaced rating is actually referencing the Switch 2. After all, the recently released port of the originalRed Dead Redemptionis already struggling to maintain 30 frames per second on the Switch, which is on the lower end of the frame rate range that many gamers would deem playable.
The Switch 2 is believed to be slated for a 2024 release, according to numerous past reports from industry insiders. And while it remains to be seen whether the upcoming system ends up receivingFar Cry 7, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently revealed that the company has indeed already made plans for Nintendo’s next console.
Even ifFar Cryis part of those plans, Ubisoft’s long-running series likely won’t be the first major FPS franchise to return to Nintendo hardware in the near future. That title is presumably reserved forCall of Duty, which Microsoft pledged to bring toNintendoconsoles over a 10-year period starting with the completion of its Activision Blizzard acquisition, which cleared its last major hurdle with a preliminary approval from the British CMA in late September.
