PlayStation Plus' Essentials tier has had a bit of a mixed year so far, with some months going above and beyond with their level of value, and some months offering three games that wholly fail to appeal. That being said,PS Plus Essentials' June 2023 gameswere pretty great, withNBA 2K23andJurassic World Evolution 2leading the pack. Now PS Plus is following it up with one of its best line-ups in a while for July 2023, bringingCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War,Endling - Extinction is Forever, andAlan Wake Remasteredto the table.

Alan Wake Remastered on PlayStation Plus Paves the Way for the Sequel
Originally released all the way back in 2010,Alan Wakeis a supernatural thrillerthat revolves around the titular crime-fiction author suffering a severe case of writer’s block. After traveling to a remote mountainside resort with his wife, Alan stumbles upon a spooky mystery that devolves into being chased by eerie shadowy figures that seem to be allergic to light. Armed with a trusty flashlight and whatever weapons he can find along the way, Alan Wake sets off to uncover the mystery behind this sleepy town.
Released in October 2021,Alan Wake Remastereddelivers the usual bells and whistles the gaming public has come to expect from a modern-day remaster. In the PlayStation 5 version of the game, players can expect to see a consistent frame rate of 60 FPS, along with greatly improved visual fidelity. The game’s UI also received a major overhaul, making the experience feel even more cinematic. PS5 players will also be able to experience some great uses ofthe PS5 DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, withAlan Wake Remasteredtaking full advantage of the controller’s innovative features.
Alan Wake Remastered’s release on PlayStation Plus is perfectly timed, given that the game will receive a sequel in October of this year. First announced back in 2021,Alan Wake 2takes place 13 years after the events of the first game. While developer Remedy Entertainment has stated that players don’t need to play the first game to enjoy the sequel, it’ll certainly heighten the narrative if players are already invested in the titular character, and have a general understanding of the threats ahead.
Unlike the first game,Alan Wake 2will take a more survival-horror approach to its gameplay, as opposed to a focus on third-person action. Based on what fans have seen so far from trailers, it seems as thoughAlan Wake 2is channeling the best parts ofResident Evil,Twin Peaks, andTrue Detective, and combining them all together to make one incredibly unique experience. WithAlan Wake 2only a few months away at this point, it’s the perfect time for the first game to come to PlayStation Plus. Now it can grab the attention of a whole new section of gamers that could turn into potential fans of the sequel later this year.
Alan Wake Remasteredis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
