Summary
The developers at Iron Gate Studio continue to takeValheimto new heights with support and updates for the game multiple years after its initial early access release.Valheimhas come a long way from where it started, but there’s still plenty of room to grow one particular feature. Even though existing mods have already experimented with this feature, futureValheimupdates should still step up to the challenge to make it official.
The ability to tame animals has been around for a very long time inValheim, although it hasn’t seen many substantial improvements despite there being several content updates and general overhauls to some of the original game’s features. Especially considering how many different animals and creatures are in the game nowadays,Valheimshould consider expanding its roster of tamable creatures. Someunofficial community mods forValheimallow players to tame more animals, although Iron Gate Studios should still explore this feature for players who chose to play on PC without mods, and for console players.

Valheim Should Let Players Tame More Animals
Currently, players can tame boars, chickens, lox, and wolves inValheimwithout needing any community mods. Taming animals inValheimoffers players access to different benefits depending on the animals that players chose to tame, and most of the tamable animals will help players in combat. Additionally, players canride tamed lox inValheimby equipping them with a saddle for a faster way to get around in the game. Overall, it’s generally worth the effort for players to domesticate animals inValheim, but that doesn’t mean that this feature shouldn’t expand.
In order to tame animals inValheim, players will need to feed the animals without being in combat with them. Thebest way to tame animals inValheimis to sneak and utilize traps or enclosures where the animal can’t escape or retaliate from within. After players have successfully tamed two or more of any kind of animal they will periodically breed and produce offspring over time, which is arguably where most of the value in taming animals is found. Beyond using tamed animals to generate food and resources, players can raise an army of animals to fight alongside them and help defend their bases. Even though wolves and lox have strong attacks and defenses, there are several other creatures inValheimthat could prove more efficient in combat.
What holds lox and wolves back as allies is that they won’t attack their own species and neither of these animals have ranged attacks. Whenplayers' structures inValheimget raided by ranged or flying enemies inValheim, this means that players will have to step in instead of relying on their animal companions to handle the intruders. Otherwise, both lox and wolves are still pretty powerful allies to have around.
Allowing players to tame more animals and monsters inValheimcould open up many different possibilities on top of the current benefits of domesticating creatures. Defeating some ofValheim’s deadliest monsters is its own accomplishment, but taming them takes things to a whole new level, far beyond collecting their trophies. Additionally, with the possibility for more animals to provide players with unique resources and means of transportation,Valheimis missing a potentially big opportunity by not expanding its roster of tamable creatures.
Following in the lox footsteps, allowing players to ride flying and swimming creatures inValheimcould be a game-changer for navigating the game’s different biomes. Additionally, some of the newer creatures in the game, like those fromthe Mistlands update, are extremely powerful and could prove to be great allies. Especially considering how community mods have already started to explore the potential of expanding uponValheim’s animal-taming features, Iron Gate Studios should follow suit and give animal-taming features the update it deserves.
Valheimis available now for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
