Summary

The Battle Pass system forOverwatch 2is getting a major quality-of-life change, as players who purchase the premium version will now be able to pick a previously released Mythic skin of their choice. While the main star of the BlizzCon 2023 presentation forOverwatch 2was thenew tank hero Mauga, there have been a plethora of announcements that will help improve the game beyond just the expansion of the hero roster. A perfect example is the rework of Competitive Rewards, as well as the addition of a new PvP mode.

However, thecontroversial Battle Pass system inOverwatch 2had long been a source of negative publicity for Blizzard Entertainment, especially once it was revealed thatDiablo 4would be following a similar format. Previously, the only way for players to unlock a Mythic skin was by progressing through each season’s Battle Pass and reaching Tier 80. Given the limited-time nature of a Battle Pass, there were no alternate options for newcomers to obtain these skins inOverwatch 2, and as the game approaches Season 8, the team at Blizzard has decided to do something about it.

As pointed out by RaidenXYae on theOverwatch 2subreddit, Blizzard is bringing all the Mythic skins back, and tying them to the purchase of a premium Battle Pass. Regardless of season, anOverwatch 2player will be able to choose which Mythic skin to pursue. The new system will still makeMythic skins inOverwatch 2as something that has to be earned, but will now be more appealing to fans who primarily play a hero that already had their time in the Battle Pass spotlight.

Overwatch 2 Mythic Skins

It is important to note that choosing an old Mythic skin means giving up on the latest one that has just made its debut.Overwatch 2players will still only be able to earn one Mythic skin per season, and they will have to grind out the tiers to unlock it. It’s a change that has struck a balance between preserving a Mythic skin’s exclusivity, offering more options to players, and increasing the value of the Battle Pass. The reception has thus far been overwhelmingly positive, though players are also curious about how the new Battle Pass system will look in the coming months.

With three (potentially four) new heroes in development, Blizzard is more than happy to supportOverwatch 2for a long time to come, sprinkled with crossover content such as therecent LE SSERAFIMOverwatch 2collaboration. Ultimately, it may take some time for the sequel to live up to the status of the originalOverwatch, but the announcements made at BlizzCon 2023 are certainly ones that promise the continued betterment of the game.
