Summary

WhenPersona 3 Reloadbrought players on a nostalgia trip, it also reminded them how far the series villains came by the time ofPersona5. Of course,Persona 3 Reloaddoes not have a bad story in its own right. After all, the original game played a major role in raising the profile of thePersonaseries. However, it also gave fans another look at the game’s villains, as well as a chance to directly contrast them withPersona 5’s offerings. As a result, it became more clear how much villains have evolved in thePersonaseries.

Persona 3 Reloadis a perk for Xbox Game Pass ownersin more ways than one. Not only do they get to experience the classic story, but they get arguably the best version of the game to date. Persona 5 Royal’s Step Up in Antagonist Design Could Be a Good Influence on Persona 6

Strega Didn’t Live Up to Their Potential in Persona 3 Reload

Even though more content was given toStrega inPersona 3 Reload, they still manage to underdeliver a bit as antagonists. They do have an interesting backstory, and Chidori in particular is an important character in Junpei’s arc. However, while they do get more scenes, they don’t get enough to make them fully stand out with their villainy or personalities. Ultimately, their goals are rather generic, and it doesn’t help that they get overshadowed by the much more impressive Nyx Avatar at the story’s climax. Ultimately, whilePersona 3 Reloadwas good to them, Strega’s role left a lot to be desired.

Maruki Was a New Kind of Persona Antagonist

In contrast,Persona 5’s antagonists had much more impact. Thenew confidant Dr. Takuto Maruki inPersona 5 Royalis the strongest example. While Maruki tried to trap everyone in a dream world, he thought that doing so would be the best way to help people. This is underscored by how in the world he created, everyone’s desires were fulfilled. While Maruki’s actions were over the line, the man himself did at least have good intentions, and he was a fascinating opponent for the Phantom Thieves. While not all villains need good intentions, Maruki shook up the formula forPersonavillains in an great way.

Persona 6 Should Keep Moving Forward With Intriguing Villain Concepts

Persona 6would probably do well to take cues fromPersona 5regarding its antagonists. Depending on thetheme ofPersona 6, there are a lot of flavors that could be taken into account when it comes to constructing its villains. They could even be well-meaning but misguided like Maruki. However, what’s more important is that the villain has enough characterization and interesting things going on to make them an effective part of the plot. For a series likePersona, which rides heavily on its themes, this is important.Persona 6’s villain will need plenty of care put into them.

Persona 3 Reloaddid a lot to elevate the classic title, but it also acted as a reminder of one of its weaknesses.Persona 3 Reload’s treatment of Stregaadded more intrigue to the faction, but they still didn’t live up to more recent antagonists. If anything, Strega should teach the developers that no matter how good an idea is, the game needs to follow through to make it truly come to life. ComePersona 6, the next set of antagonists could be a perfect fit with their own exciting concept.
