As a new generation of consoles looms on the horizon, Sony’sPlayStation 5has remained in the shadows. Because Sonycancelled its annual Destination PlayStation eventfor a future announcement, details around the mysterious new console remain elusive. However, according to recent leaks, Sony seems determined to stay ahead of the competition when it comes to graphics performance.
According to a report from PCMagandprevious leaks from Twitter users Komachiand IsAParrot, the PlayStation 5’s capabilities are on par with some of the best graphics cards on the market. Specifically, the report compares graphics processing units (aka GPUs), which allow consoles and computers to efficiently display sharper graphics to their users.

The report describes thePlayStation 5’s GPU chip, “Oberon,” which can run up to 2.000 GHz and provide 9.2 teraflops of performance. While Oberon already outperforms its immediate predecessor (the PS4 Pro, which can only provide 4.2 teraflops of performance), the report compares the chip’s capabilities to the GeForce RTX 2070 Super Graphics Card, a cutting edge graphics processing unit. Its findings reveal that the two systems have very similar statistics, as the RTX 2070 Super also performs at a little over 9 teraflops. However, PCMag ultimately concludes that the PlayStation 5 edges out the competition with a “higher GPU performance.”
Although this analysis seems solid, it depends on the validity of its sources. Komachi is a well-known leaker who has previously provided information about both the PS5 and its major rival, the Xbox Series X. However, Sony has been uncharacteristically quiet about its new console, and not much has been verified outside of a new logo andinformation about its controller capabilities. Until Sony itself reveals what the PS5 has under its hood, it might be best to take the possibility of “groundbreaking” graphics with a grain of salt.
In the end, though, graphics capabilities shouldn’t be too much of a concern for gamers. When it comes to HD visuals, the future is already bright for the next generation of consoles, and the graphical differences will likely be negligible to the naked eye. However, those who are enthusiastic about the PS5’s capabilities might not have to wait long - current speculation statesthat the PS5 might be revealed next month.
After the PS5’s mysteries are revealed, fans will likely just turn their attention to the selection of games that each platform will offer. There is already speculation overwhich franchises will produce games for the PlayStation, and which will be lost to the newest Xbox on the market. The console wars will only continue to escalate from here!
