The PlayStation 5 console is now available, at least when it’s in stock, and is already incredibly successful. A big reason why is Sony’s continued output of first-party exclusive games, with a heavy reliance on popular IP. For example,Spider-Man Miles Moralesis the PS5’s biggest launch exclusive, and bothGod of War: RagnarokandHorizon: Forbidden Westare the most-anticipated releases forthcoming. TheUnchartedfranchise, however, has no new game announced, and that’s leading to a lot of speculation.
The possibility of anUncharted 5, or perhaps another spin-off game likeUncharted: The Lost Legacy, is keen in the minds of PlayStation fans. After all, the success of theUnchartedfranchise defined much of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 generations. As such, fans have speculated thatUncharted 5truly is in development. The argument is that it just makes sense for Sony to wantUnchartedto continue. But one industry insider is throwing some doubt on that theory.

A recent discussion on the forum ResetEra brought up a theory thatUncharted 5was in development at anewly formed studio in San Diego. PlayStation’s former talent acquisitions lead Fiona Cherbak triggered this speculation with a job listing tweet stating that “PlayStation Visual Arts has a new game development team in partnership with a major Sony studio,” PlayStation Visual Arts being the San Diego team forming the new studio. Fans naturally assumed they were partnering with Naughty Dog, but that’s where the insider comes in.
Twitter user and industry insider shinobi602, best known for hislove ofMass Effect, replied in this speculation thread aboutUncharted 5. Another user had said, “NextUnchartedfor sure. It’s still Sony’s biggest IP. After UC4 and the new movie they won’t just stop, lol.” To which shinobi602 responded with a gif saying “Are you sure?” in a very flippant way. The clear implication is that shinobi602 is throwing ice on the rumor. While his dismissal isn’t said clearly, it’s still implied.
Suffice to say, gifs from insiders on forum threads focusing on speculation aren’t necessarily wholly reliable. Nevertheless, shinobi602 is very much a reliable insider source for a variety of video game details. It may be worth approaching rumors about anewUnchartedgamewith an extra degree of skepticism, at least until more reliable leaks or announcements have been made.
Unchartedremains a very popular franchise and, as noted, has amajor motion picture starring Tom Hollandbeing released in the near future. If a sequel or spin-off isn’t currently in development, then fans will just have to make their voices heard to PlayStation and hope for the best.Uncharted’s likely to come back in some form down the line.
