APokemonfan has displayed online an Unown keycap set that they received as a Christmas gift, giving their PC keyboard a hard-to-read makeover. Interest in thePokemonfranchise is the highest it’s been in years, with the release ofPokemon Scarlet & Violet, and the announcement that long-term protagonist Ash will be leaving the anime series. Because of this interest, fan-made creations continue to innovate in ways not seen before by thePokemoncommunity, with no end in sight for the franchise.
Unown is a Gen 2 Pokemon with 26 forms, each based on a character from the Latin alphabet, making it perfect for a keyboard redesign. While some fans will look to thenew generations of Pokemonfor inspiration, many still look to the designs of the older generations to create their fan art. After all, the classics are often the best.

The keycaps featured by Redditor Taboada12 replace the standard QWERTY layout with the 26 Unown forms. While it undeniably looks cool, it makes it much harder to read the actual keys, with Reddit user tSword_ quipping, “Nice! Now you can mistype with style!” The keycaps show off many of the iconic designs from thePokemonfranchise, withPoke Ballsand the Pokedex featured. It’s accented with a red, navy, and white color scheme that makes every key stand out. Unfortunately for fans of RGB, the keycaps don’t illuminate, but it more than makes up for it with their extremely unique designs.
The redesign has not gone unappreciated among Reddit’sPokemoncommunity, with the post receiving over 500 upvotes within a day of posting. Reddit user Aveleene did however point out a noticeable exclusion. Most of thePokemon typesare present on the keycaps, but Fairy and Bug types are curiously missing. The user even presented a solution for the issue, claiming, “I would have put the two arcanine/liligant shoft keys next to the braviary and then added the remaining two types.” While the keycaps are already great, it’s interesting that a simple fix could see them be even better.
Pokémonis one of the biggest entertainment franchises in the world, so it takes something special to stand out among the sea of fan art. With 1008 Pokemon to choose from, it’s no surprise that fan art can range anywhere from the weird to the wonderful. Fans have even createdPokemonart on an Etch-a-Sketch. With this context,Pokemonkeycaps aren’t so strange and definitely fall on the “wonderful” side of the scale.
