Summary

Developer Rockstar Games has released a new update forRed Dead Online, the open-world multiplayer component ofRed Dead Redemption 2. The new update is exclusively for the PC version ofRed Dead Online, and should be available for all PC players as of Jul 20, 2025.

Like the base game ofRed Dead Redemption 2,Red Dead Onlinewas originally exclusive to consoles when it launched in 2018. When the PC version launched in 2019, players were given a chance to tacklethe huge world ofRed Dead Onlinewith the benefit of beefy PC hardware that could greatly outstrip the performance ceilings of then-current consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The latest update for the game appears to be addressing some PC-exclusive instability.According to the officialRed Dead OnlinePC patch notesfor August 02, 2025, the new update is categorized under “Game Stability and Performance.” Rockstar’s patch addressed “several issues” related to causing crashes inRed Dead Online. The patch notes were not specific about what, exactly, those issues were.

The community’s reaction, however, may hold a clue about the patch’s effects. In the wake of the patch, at least one user on theRed Dead Onlinesubreddit suggested that they were no longer experiencing crashes related to using fast travel and the wilderness camp. Twitter user Tez2 suggested in a post that the patch also addressed a method used by cheaters to cause other players' games to crash shortly after loading.Cheaters have been a persistent problem inRed Dead Online, so if some of the crash issues are related to a method they exploited, then the lack of detail in the patch notes might make sense.

ThoughRed Dead OnlineandRed Dead Redemption’s presence on PC has no doubt been a boon for players with the hardware to run it, it hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing for PC players. The sheer diversity of hardware setups and specifications in the PC space compared with the static specs of even high-end game consoles means that there are many more ways for a game to be unstable or perform poorly. And in the case of truly vast games like Rockstar’s open-world titles, even rigorous testing and quality assurance practices can’t catch every glitch, bug, and exploit without failure. Case in point:Red Dead Redemption 2andRed Dead Onlinewere plagued with technical issueson PC at first.

Even a well-resourced developer like Rockstar Games might see PC gaming as a sort of “wild west” situation, full of unpredictable threats and requiring care to manage. This might explain whyRockstar tends not to launch big titles likeRed Dead Onlineon PC at first, even if that can frustrate some players who want to experience some of the industry’s biggest games on their platform of choice right away.
