It’s apparent from playingRed Dead Redemption 2that the developers did their homework, as there are multiple Easter eggs and similarities to classic cowboy films. However, this sentiment rings louder than ever when the game pays glorious homage to Quentin Tarantino’s bloody Revisionist WesternDjango Unchained.
Three years after the best-selling cowboy-shooter has hit store shelves, many ofRed Dead Redemption 2’smore prominent references have been found by players and movie fanatics alike. Such as the overt nod toThe Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford;this is when the game replicates a gang of outlaws waiting on the tracks to hijack a slowly approaching train. But as is always the case with Rockstar Games, there are dozens of moresmall details and references inRDR2just waiting to be discovered.

Now, one morerecognizably distinctive movie referencehas gone viral on Reddit. Pointed out by the eagle-eyed fan, Pewds Minecraft, the resemblances in this shot-by-shot comparison are strikingly similar. From the several looming silhouettes to the towering mansion being lit up with a warm, golden glow. It is clear the developers have managed to visually reproduce the style fromDjango Unchained.
For gamers who are unfamiliar with the mission featured in the image, it is the infamous Braithwaite’s mansion undertaking. An operation that sees Arthur Morgan, the game’s ruthless protagonist, and his gang of gunslingers shooting up the plantation then further murdering the undivided family inside to get John Marston’s son back. Just one of the manyaction-packed lead-slinging missions inRDR2that left a mark on players, with one user straightforwardly stating that it is “one of the best moments in video game history.”
With that said, one can argue that the whole massacre itself inRed Dead Redemption 2is a reference to the blood-spattered plantation shootout inDjango Unchained.Scenes from the film depict Candyland; a major plantation in Mississippi owned by Calvin Candie, who serves as the main antagonist of the film. It was the fourth-largest in the state before it went out of business after Django and his partner killed Candie, his dozen guns-for-hires, then destroyed the entire mansion with explosives in true Tarantino fashion.
Overall, it is only natural for game developers to look past their own medium for inspiration in other fields of entertainment. After all, theLord of the Ringsseries has for years served as the foundation for many works of fantasy. But as most gamers already know, there are many more remarks to thewestern genre’s sprawling filmography inRDR2.
Red Dead Redemption 2is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
