Super Mario 64speedrunner Cheese has made history at the European Speedrunning Marathons. While performing before a live audience, he broke the 120-Star world record time, clocking in at 01:38:54.
There are a number of different speedrunning categories inSuper Mario 64. One mode is the 0-star run, in which players try and beat the game as quickly as possible, which is done by ignoring the stars and glitching through most of the game. At ESM, Cheese was competing in the 120-Star event, in which players race to 100 percent complete the game in the shortest amount of time. 100 percent runs are some of the most popular types of speed runs, even though they can beshockingly long, like inBreath of the Wild.

Super Mario 64is one of the mostpopular games to speedrun, and Cheese is one of its most popular runners. Cheese was a previous world record holder for the 120-Star run. His time of 1:40:51 was the fastest in the world, until it was beaten by speed runner Puncayshun in 2015. Puncayshun’s time of 1:40:44 remained the world record for an unprecedented four and a half years, and only now has has Cheese was able to wrestle it back from him.
At the ESM, Cheese had an absolutely dominant run, smashing the previous record of 1:40:44. He beat this time by a minute and 50 seconds. An improvement of this much is almost unheard of in theSuper Mario 64Speed running community, where differences are normally measured in seconds. To understand just how much faster this time is, the last time a speed run record was set, it was ten seconds faster than the previous one.
It’s also worth noting that he was running the game in front both a live audience and people watching at home on Twitch. This must have added an insane amount of pressure, and that he could perform under these conditions speaks to Cheese’s prowess as a speedrunner. Like many live speed running events, this one wasraising money for charity.
Runners have used computers to make theoretically perfect runs, known as Tool Assisted Speedruns, or TAS for short. The current TAS record for 120-StarSuper Mario 64is 1:20:41. This means that there is still theoretically just over 20 minutes of time that can be cut from this record. But people aren’t computers and will never be able to input as accurately as or as quickly as they can. S,o this record may stay the record for years to come, especially if other runners are focusing on theSuper Mario OdysseyNipple Run.
