SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydratedhas brought a fan-favorite 3D platformer into the modern age. TheSpongeBobremake has been popular on Steam, netting 15,419 concurrent users after launch, but many have expressed issues with all different versions of the game. Luckily, it appears THQ Nordic is aware of these concerns and has begun pushing out patches.

The publisher told players via Twitter that a patch, updating the game to version 1.0.2, is now available that fixes “minor issues” and adds Japanese voice acting from Yoji Ueda; known for playing Paz inGhost in the Shell; as Squidward. No patch notes have been released for the update, but comments on Twitter and Reddit have suggested it fixed a previously glitched golden spatula in Squidward’s House and improved resolution on Switch.

One Reddit user named WONDERwaffle3 posted a thread to the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit today looking to figure out what has changed, as their main takeaway is it appears to have restricted SpongeBob’s tiptoeing while moving in certain angles using the analog stick. No consensus has been made as of this writing. THQ Nordic says another patch is in the works for “major bugs” inBattle for Bikini Bottom, most of which were reported by the community through a RedMine page advertised in June.

While it is good to see THQ Nordic and developer Purple Lamp going back to address concerns, a lot of the damage to this remake’s reputation has already been done.Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydratedreviewshave suggested the game is a marked improvement graphically, but is marred with bugs and doesn’t do much to improve upon the formula from 2003.

Another general miss according to players is thebrand-new multiplayer battle modethat brings in cut content from the original game, but fails to do so in a particularly engaging way. That by no means suggests the remake doesn’t have its fans, and the development team is right to do its due diligence by them.

However, it is unlikely thatBattle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydratedwill join its predecessor in the annals of video game history, even with changes being made now. It was meant to coincide withThe SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, now delayeddue to the coronavirus pandemic, but it seems the game could have used more time in the oven beforehand.
