CD Projekt Red announced today thatThe Witcher 3: Complete Editionwill be receiving a brand new port on the PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The game is going to take advantage of the technical enhancements such as ray-tracing and faster loading, butplayers ofThe Witcher3 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox Onewill also receive the next-gen versions for free when they launch in 2021. Players yet to jump intoThe Witcher 3will also be able to purchase the game separately on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

In a post onThe Witcher’s website, CD Projekt Red claims that the port will “take advantage of the most powerful gaming hardware, the next-gen edition of the game will featurea range of visual and technical improvements, including ray tracing and faster loading times across the base game, both expansions, and all extra content.” It continues, “The next generation edition ofThe Witcher 3: Wild Huntwill release as a standalone purchase for PC, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, as well as a free update for everyone who already owns the game on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.”
While the boxed versions of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X releases claim that the game will feature the “Complete Edition,” which compiles all of the base game and its expansions, it is unconfirmed ifowners of the base version ofThe Witcher 3who bought its DLC later will be able to upgrade to the next-generation version.
Fans ofThe Witcher 3are aware of the fact that, while the game is commonly perceived as a modern masterpiece, even on the Xbox One X the game is demanding due to its vast open world, a next generation upgrade is exactly what the game needs. This port also opens the game up to new players, namely fans of Netflix’s TV adaptation ofThe Witcherwhich sawThe Witcher 3see a huge surge in sales during the end of 2019. With the second season coming up, as well as a multitude of spin-offs, even more fans are likely to jump into the sprawling RPG series.
The Witcher 3: Wild Huntis available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions will release in 2021.
