Summary
A fewThe Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimplayers recently had a discussion about the worst perk trees in the game. Despite the game being over a decade old at this point,Skyrimfans are still debating about many aspects of the game such aswho is the best follower inSkyrim, and this latest discussion highlighted some of the ways that a few skills simply don’t seem as effective as others.
Skyrimoffers a more streamlined leveling-up experience when compared to its predecessorObliviondue to the perk system. Players get levels by improving their abilities and then attain skill points that can be used in perks. This system allows the player to decide which skill tree they want to invest, butsomeSkyrimperks are definitely better than others.

The discussion was started on Reddit. To the OP, the worst skill tree ever was Lockpicking, as locks were pretty easy to pick inSkyrim, especially for an experienced player, and lockpicks were simply everywhere. That seems to be a pretty prevalent opinion in the community, as most people also agreed that both Lockpicking and Pickpocket are two of the least useful skill trees. The main reason for getting these two skills would be if one was role-playing as a stealth-focused, rogue-style character.
Aside from these two skills, however, opinions seemed to vary a lot. Forgedfox53, for instance, focused more on themagic skill trees inSkyrim. According to them, both Illusion and Alteration are not very widely used for most builds. Cookiesncognac argued that there’s no need to use these spells, as well as Restoration ones, as the player has to swap between spells and weapons when using them. Instead, they could just use potions or food, which is instantaneous. Stillawache, on the other hand, defended that the most useless skill tree was blocking. They believed that for ranged builds, there was no need to block as most enemies would not be able to get close enough to hurt them physically.
In any case, the usefulness of all skill trees is very dependent on character build, asSkyrimallows for powerful buildsand has an extensive range of options. While Illusion is deemed useless by several players, for instance, a Sneak-focused build with good Illusion spells such as Frenzy could make enemies kill each other and “become a literal God,” as pointed out by CiceroForConsul. So, it’s probable thatSkyrimplayers will keep debating about the best and worst skills for times to come.
