Nearly 26 years after the game’s original debut on the PlayStation, Limited Run Games announced thatTombais coming to modern systems thanks to the Carbon Engine.Limited Run Gamesalso revealed that it is working with the original director and producer ofTombato bring the PlayStation cult classic to the modern age for more gamers to enjoy.

Originally released in 1997 for the PS1,Tomba, also known asTombi, is a 2D platformer that was developed by Whoopee Camp, an independent studio run by former Capcom developer Tokuro Fujiwara. Fujiwara’s most recent work wasGhosts ‘N Goblins Resurrectionin 2021. InTomba, players controlled the titular pink-haired protagonist as he fought against the Evil Pigs to recover his late grandfather’s bracelet and remove the curses that the Evil Pigs cast upon the land. The success ofTombaprompted Whoopee Camp to release a sequel,Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return, in 1999. While the titles have been exclusive to the PlayStation line since release, the Carbon Engine will give gamers more platforms to playTombaon.

During the July 12 broadcast of Limited Run’s LRG3 show, which isa parody and tribute to E3, it was revealed that Limited Run Games would be working together with Fujiwara to bringTombato the modern age. During LRG3, the original opening movie for Tomba was shown as a way to reveal the game’s impending re-release. In this animation, Tomba chases some animals and eventually gets into a fight with a group of Evil Pigs. Tomba is knocked out during the scuffle and his grandfather’s bracelet is stolen by the pigs, which sets the plot of the game in motion. The trailer ends with confirmation thatTombawill be released via Limited Run’s Carbon Engine, which is a way to emulate older games on modern hardware.

However, no release date for Tomba was given by Limited Run Games at the time of writing. In addition to working with Whoopee Camp, Limited Run confirmed that the original composer forTomba, Harumi Fujita, will return to compose a new soundtrack for the game’s re-release. Fujita’s recent work includes the soundtracks fortitles such asWindjammers 2andStreets of Rage 4.

It is not known how much of the original soundtrack will remain in the re-release ofTomba. With the announcement of otherretro games such as theGex Trilogybeing re-released by Limited Run Games, it remains to be seen ifTomba 2: The Evil Swine Returnwill get similar treatment toTombain the future.

Tombais available now for PS1, with PC, PS4, PS5, and Switch versions now in development.
