Whips are a new type of weapon inV Risingthat was added in the full release version of the game. It is a melee weapon that lashes out in a fixed range, dealing damage to everything in its way while dealing bonus damage to targets at the very tip of the receiving end.

The whip is an excellent weapon for fighting normal enemies, other players, andV Blood bosses inV Risingthanks to its range and utility. However, this weapon doesn’t become available until much later in the game. Here’s how to unlock it.

Domina the Bladedancer in V Rising

Updated July 27, 2025 by Marc Santos:As of writing, the whip is the last weapon type players get to unlock in V Rising. While every other weapon is unlocked as soon as players reach iron-tier equipment, whips only become available at around Gear Level 60, where players can comfortably take on the early parts of southern Gloomrot. This guide has been updated to give better detail on how to get the Iron Whip and its Merciless version before moving onto the weapon’s Sanguine versions.

How To Unlock Whips In V Rising

The Iron Whip is the first version of this weapon that players are likely to unlock. The recipe for this weapon drops from Domina the Bladedancer, a Level 63 V Blood boss who can catch a lot of players off-guard with her sweeping electric attacks. You can always find her patrolling Rustlock Village in Gloomrot South.

Defeating Domina unlocks the recipes for Iron Whip and Dark Silver Whip, among other things. Much like theother weapon types inV Rising, you’ll have to find the recipe books for Merciless whip variants somewhere in the world, either from boss drops, chests, or merchants. If you get the Merciless recipes early, you won’t be able to craft them until you beat Domina.

Simon Belmont in V Rising

Whips have the following abilities:

This weapon’s playstyle revolves around crowd control and range management. Both of its abilities have effects that can cripple your opponent’s movement, leaving them vulnerable to spells and follow-up attacks. Take advantage of Snare and Entangle to make sure your whip is always hitting targets at the tip of its range.

Sanguine Whip Recipe

The Sanguine Whip is a direct upgrade to the Dark Silver Whip, and you’ll get the recipe for this by beatingSimon Belmont, a boss whoroamstheDunley Farmlands and Farbane Woods. He was introduced in thecollaboration betweenV RisingandCastlevania. Simon is very high on the list of bosses, and his level is listed as two question marks. We recommend fighting him at around level 80 for a more comfortable experience.

Fighting Simon can feel a bit overwhelming. He uses his entire arsenal of vampire-hunting equipment, which means players will have to deal with a plethora of attack types that can be difficult to dodge or counter if not paced properly. The boss can attack from all ranges, and he closes gaps surprisingly quickly, which means even ranged weapons aren’t safe from him.

Simon Belmont in the Legacy of Castlevania trailer in V Rising

Any weapon can work against Simon Belmont, but we highly recommend using axes for its gap-closing dash attack and ranged poking capabilities. If you want to deal more sustained damage, thenV Rising’sdual pistolsor spear weapons should allow for better DPS. As for magic, minions summoned from the Unholy magic school can buy you time to sneak in some hits or recuperate while Simon is busy.
