WhileAtomic Heartis a sci-fi game, it still has at least a couple of weapons that could be considered more down-to-earth, and an expert on firearms has given an analysis to see how accurate they are when compared to real guns.Taking influence from the likes ofBioShockandFallout, Mundfish’s Soviet-era FPS has a dose of science fiction blended with alternate history. Although the game was released to mixed responses, it’s at least a somewhat unique IP in an overly saturated genre.
Having said that,Atomic Hearthas been the center of controversy. With the story taking place in the 1950’s during the height of this fictional Soviet Union, Ukraine has taken umbrage with the title’s heavy Russian themes and asked Microsoft, Sony, and Valve to ban it. At the time of writing,Atomic Heartis still available, but the controversies don’t end there. There’s also been some backlash owing to the FPS featuring an old cartoon that depicts a racial stereotype that a lot of fans have found offensive. In general, it’s not been the best start for the game.

That aside,Atomic Heartis still a pretty enjoyable shooter, and a weapons expert has deemed it worthy of giving an analysis of some of the game’s firearms. Jonathan Ferguson is a firearms expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries in the UK who frequently gives his opinion on video game guns. In his latest video, he goes through each ofAtomic Heart’s firearms to see how they compare to their real-world counterparts. While the Kalash is actually pretty accurate due to being modelled on an AK-47, the upgrades give Ferguson some amusement thanks to their more unrealistic and bombastic nature. However, he understands that developers take liberties, especially when it comes to sci-fi. It’s also interesting to note that he describes the Electro as the “Fallout-iest” gun in the game.
This doesn’t mean Ferguson is deridingAtomic Heart’s weapons. He is just interested in how they stack up against actual firearms. However, he does take some issue with the slowly spinning projectile from the Fat Boy, but that’s purely from a gameplay perspective. The expert has also doneanalyses of the guns inGoldenEye 007and theHalf-Lifeseries, and no doubt there will be more videos coming up.
Despite the controversy, Mundfish’s FPS is still being enjoyed by fans. In fact, someone recently did aninsane speedrun ofAtomic Heart, achieving a mind-melting time of just seven minutes. Clearly there are plenty of people out there who are enjoying the game, despite the recent backlash.
Atomic Heartis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
