Of the many announcements Sony had for its latest PlayStation showcase,Spider-Man 2was definitely at the top of many lists when it came to showstoppers. Details about the game are currently scarce at the time of this writing, but the game might have a slight involvement with Andy Serkis of all people.
One of the most exciting announcements aside from the release date for Insomniac’sSpider-Man 2was the confirmation that Venom,Spider-Man’s symbiote nemesis, would make his grand entrance onto the scene. Venom the character has gotten a great deal of spotlight in the last few months, asVenom: Let There Be Carnage, the sequel to 2018’sVenom, released earlier this month. Now it seems that the director of that film, Andy Serkis (Gollum himself), may be involved in giving determined players some congratulatory words.

On October 7th, PlayStation Europe released an unlisted video on YouTube showing Andy Serkis congratulating players for earning a platinum trophy. However, Serkis curiously makes no indication as to what game the platinum trophy is for. His message is brief and functional, merely an acknowledgement onhow difficult platinum trophies can be to obtainand punctuated with “well done.” All the while, the video has bursts of footage from theVenomsequel.
The mystery remains with no definitive answer, but therearea few strong indicators that it might relate to the upcomingSpider-Man 2. The most obvious facts that this is a PlayStation Europe account and the specific wording that Serkis congratulates players on earning aplatinum trophypoint to the message being for a PlayStation game. Additionally, the fact that Andy Serkis is the director of the Venom film and the highlight thatVenom will appear inSpider-Man 2suggests that the message is specifically for the game.
However, there is one rather evident flaw in this conclusion:Spider-Man 2isn’t set to release till 2023. This is certainly a long time before players will see anySpider-Mangame involving anything involving a symbiote, so it begs the question of whether this is enormously premature. A message like this, one that is frankly a good exercise in brand synergy, is normally intended to strike while the proverbial iron is hot. As players are roughly two years from Insomniac’s follow-up, that’s quite a long time before they would see this message. Combine this with the mystery of whetherVenom: Let There Be Carnagewill still be in the cultural consciousness, this is a puzzling mystery indeed.
If the message is not forSpider-Man2but is instead for something else, or whether this is simply a scrapped idea not meant to see the light of day, is currently unclear. But then, the best mysteries are the ones that leave one pondering.
