It is no real secret that the song “Africa” by the band Toto is one of the most well-known songs in the world, having garnered over 741 million views on its official YouTube video at the time of writing. The band Weezer also did a cover of this song back in 2018, which was also very popular. So thisThe Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Maskplayer, named Bigfatfrown, decided to give their own cover of “Africa” a shot with their 3DS by playingMajora’s Mask 3D.
Majora’s Maskis often considered one of the darkest gamesin Nintendo’s history.InMajora’s Mask, Link is able to transform into different Zelda races. Each race uses their own instrument instead of the ocarina: the Deku Scrub has pipes, the Goron uses bongos, and the Zora uses a guitar. One of the masks in the game requires players to play a song that uses all the instruments in the game, which was likely an inspiration for Bigfatfrown.

Naturally, in order to recreate the song, it can’t be played all at the same time. So Bigfatfrown spliced together various clips of them playing different parts of the song together to make a pretty good rendition of the classic song. They also make use of the less well-known technique of changing the pitch of the song by moving the Circle Pad up or down. The timing of it all is impressive, and it must have taken a while to memorize where to start playing all the clips at each point.
Zelda fans have shown their love forMajora’s Maskin other ways, but not always through the power of songs.Majora’s Maskhas a great way to show off one’s musical talents if they put in the time.
Using this kind of method, it’s surprising that more people haven’t tried using this to recreate some of their favorite songs. Given the improved controls of the3DS version over the originalMajora’s Mask, hopefully more creative music can be made usingMajora’s Mask 3D.
